How to play Wordrattle

The goal

Find as many words as you can in a tray of letter dice before the timer runs out. Longer words are worth much more, so hunt for the big ones.

The rules

  1. Rattle. Press Rattle the dice to shake the tray and start the clock.
  2. Make a word. Start on any die and move to a touching die for each next letter: up, down, sideways or diagonally.
  3. Long enough. Words need at least 3 letters on a 4 × 4 board, or 4 letters on 5 × 5 and 6 × 6.
  4. Each die once. In Classic paths, a word can use each die only once. The Qu die counts as two letters.
  5. Real words only. A word must be in our word list. Plurals and other forms count as separate words. Each word scores once per round.
  6. Time’s up. When the clock runs out, or you press Done, the round ends and you see every word on the board.

Entering words

  • Drag through the dice and lift your finger (or let go of the mouse) to enter the word.
  • Tap the dice one at a time, then press Enter. Tap the last die again to take it back, or press ✕ to clear the word. If you’d rather tap the last die again to enter the word, switch on Tap the last letter again to enter in Settings.
  • Type the word on a keyboard and press Enter. The board finds a path for you. Type Q for the Qu die.

Scoring

Word length Classic paths Loop paths
3–4 letters 1 1
5 letters 2 2
6 letters 3 3
7 letters 5 4
8 letters 11 6
9 or more 11 8

Every word you find shows its points in a gold badge.

Loop paths

In free play and duels you can pick Loop paths: a die can be used more than once in the same word, just never twice in a row. Long words are much easier to make this way, so the scoring is flatter, but big words still pay the most.

Daily, archive, free play and duels

  • The daily is the same 5 × 5 board for everyone, with 3 minutes and Classic paths. You get one try, and a new board arrives at your local midnight. Starting another board part-way through ends the daily with the words you have.
  • The archive has every past daily since Wordrattle began. Pick a day on the calendar from New board, then Archive. Days you’ve played show your best score, and you can replay them as often as you like. The archive never changes your streak.
  • Free play lets you choose a 4 × 4, 5 × 5 or 6 × 6 Mega board; a 1, 3 or 5 minute timer, or Zen with no clock; and Classic or Loop paths.
  • Duel is for two players on one device. Player 1 plays a full round, then hands over; the board stays hidden until Player 2 is ready. Words you both found cancel out and score for neither (you can switch that off when you start).

After the round

Your words stay in view with their points. Words you missed opens the rest of the board, grouped by length. Tap any word to light up its path on the dice, numbered in order.

Statistics

A round counts once it ends. Wrangler or better counts the solo rounds where you found at least 20% of the board’s points. Your daily streak grows with each daily you finish on its own day. Free play keeps a best score for every board, path and timer you’ve tried, and duels keep each player’s wins by name.

Keyboard

Type letters to build a word, Backspace to remove one, Enter to enter it and Escape to clear it. You can also Tab to the dice, move with the arrow keys, add the focused die with Space and press Enter to enter the word.

Tips

  • Look for common endings like -ED, -ER, -ING and -S: they turn one word into several.
  • Spend the first seconds on a long word. One 8-letter word in Classic is worth eleven short ones.

Questions

Do I need an account? No. Your game saves on this device automatically. An optional account adds cloud saves across devices.

Why was my word rejected? It may be too short, already found, not in our word list, or its letters may not connect on this board. The bar under the dice says which.

Where do the words come from? The public-domain ENABLE word list, plus a few modern words. A handful of offensive words still score if you find them, but they’re never shown in the list of words you missed.
