How to play Truffle Hunt
The goal
Be the first to bank 100 points (50 in a quick game). Points only count once they are banked.
The rules
- Take turns. Two to four players take turns with one six-sided die. The first player is picked at random and named before the first throw.
- Throw. On your turn, throw as often as you like. Each throw of 2 to 6 adds its number to your basket, this turn’s total.
- A 1 is gobbled. Throw a 1 and your turn ends at once: the basket is lost and nothing is added to your score.
- Bank. Instead of throwing, bank the basket: it is added to your score and the turn passes. You can’t bank an empty basket.
- Win. The first player whose banked score reaches the target wins at once. The others do not get another turn, and a basket that would reach the target still has to be banked.
Modes
- Vs Scienceboos: you and one to three computer Scienceboos. Easy banks somewhere between 12 and 18 and never checks the score. Medium banks at 20. Hard banks a little later when it trails and a little sooner when it leads, and near the finish it keeps throwing until it can win.
- Pass and play: two to four people share one device, each with a name.
- Play to: 50 for a quick game, or 100 for the standard one.
Keyboard
- R throws and B banks, from anywhere in the game.
- H asks for a hint, when the Hint button is on in Settings.
- Tab reaches the seats; Enter on a seat reads that player’s score.
Tips
- Banking at 20 is the classic rule of thumb: it gets the most out of a turn on average.
- When someone is close to the target, a safe bank may not be enough. Chase the win.
- The Hint button, off by default, says what a Hard Scienceboo would do and why.
Questions
Do I need an account? No. Your game saves on this device automatically. An optional account adds cloud saves across devices.
What happens if I leave a game? It waits for you. Starting a new one ends it; a game against the Scienceboos you have banked in counts as played.
Is it the game with the pig-shaped dice? No. Truffle Hunt is the traditional dice game Pig, played with one ordinary die.
